<p>Important aspect to look at, when talking about fertilizers specifically, is the difference between organic and chemical fertilizers. Both types of fertilizers have certain situations where they shine, and both feature the same three primary nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, often indicated as an “NPK” ratio. While both contain nutrients needed for plants to grow, natural fertilizer contains smaller amounts of nutrients than chemical and chemical fertilizer does not contain the additional organic matter and microorganisms that organic fertilizer does. <p>Traditionally, substrates are usually divided into two main types: soil-based and peat-based. As a substrate constituent, peat is superior to any other material.</p>

<h2><strong><strong>Correctly chosen peat substrate is a ke</strong>y</strong></h2>

<p>Peat substrates consist of various components and its mixture depends on the purpose &#8211; desired yield. Such substrates may consist of different peat types, sand, soil and other additives. The quality requirements for black soil and garden soil substrates are not as high as for peat substrates, so you have to be very careful choosing it, especially when buying from unknown producer. <strong>Choosing Nord Agri you choose the best quality and performing substrates. </strong></p>

<p>When looking for a peat substrates, a few important things should be taken into consideration.</p>

<li>Firstly, the acidity level or pH. Cucumber, bean or cabbage seedlings need an alkaline substrate with a pH of 6-7. For growing tomato seedlings, more acidic peat is allowed &#8211; from pH 5.8. Some flowers need even more acidic peat &#8211; pH 5.3. The cheapest is unprocessed peat, but it is suitable only for true acid lovers &#8211; rhododendrons, blueberries, garden azaleas. Other plants cannot be planted in it.</li>
<li>Secondly, the structure of a substrate mix. It affects the amount of support plants&#8217; roots receive, it affects the water retention, and it determines how well your plants can take up air, water and nutrients. To ensure optimal plant production and superb growing conditions in each climate regions, Nord Agri offers large variety of substrate&#8217;s fraction starting from extra coarse (20-40 mm) and ending with extra fine (0-5 mm). In most cases, choosing an extra fine fraction substrate with a pH of 5.5-6.5 you can not go wrong.</li>

The poinsettia flower was discovered during his voyage to Mexico around Christmas and afterwards presented to Americans. Since then, poinsettia, also known as the Christmas Star flower, has been the main Christmas plant all over the world. In the UK the poinsettia has become the UK’s number one houseplant over the winter holiday season with over eight million plants sold every year!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Worth mentioning</strong></h2>



<p>Although red poinsettias are the most popular and the best-selling of all, thanks to the hard work of breeders over the past decades, more than 150 different varieties have been created, including beautiful pinks, oranges, creams and whites. <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What else matters?</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Watering</strong></p>



<p>Poinsettia requires abundant watering. But at the same time, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the soil. The water temperature should be several degrees warmer than the air temperature in the room. From cold water, the plant can shed its leaves. Water during irrigation should saturate the substrate, pass through the drainage, and its excess should come out of the hole in the pot. In no case should the roots be allowed to be constantly in the water.</p>



<p><strong>Spraying</strong></p>



<p>Twice a day, it is necessary to spray the air around the plant, increasing its humidity, thereby creating the conditions of native tropical forests. At the same time, it is not desirable to get on the leaves, they can become stained. In March, spraying should be stopped for a dormant period, but around May with the beginning of the growth of new shoots, spraying may be resumed. The frequency depends on humidity and air temperature. On hot days, spraying should be carried out more often, on cool days without it at all.</p>

<p>As Nord Agri offers clients a wide range of varieties of bags, including 250L, 300L and 6000L bales, the preparation of the products is very important. When opening up the bags, there are many things and practices to consider. For superb product performance and extraction of all the product characteristics and benefits, you should follow our recommendations!</p>



<p>Prior to usage, the compacted substrate from the large bags of 250L and 300L sizes and Big Bales must be carefully released to ensure that the peat&#8217;s structure is not disrupted. This is especially true for coarse-structured substrates, as excessive loosening or mixing can destroy the coarseness and cause the structure to become too fine for its intended use. </p>



<p>High-speed mixers and the force of grinding and mixing equipment are extremely damaging to peat.</p>



<p>The grower must select an appropriate machine to properly release the compacted peat. To physically dislodge the material on a clean concrete surface, a fork or broad shovel is recommended.</p>

<p>Quite often our customers and clients ask us about the differences between the Baltic Peat harvesting types. Here we have explained the differences as well as the reasons, why we should choose one or the other. Here are some of the differences between the peat types as well as advantages of using particular type of peat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">MILLED PEAT</h2>



<p>When harvesting milled peat it requires milling a few centimetres of the peat fields, which are levelled and drained beforehand. The loosened layer is turned repeatedly. The dry, loose peat is then pulled or shoved together into a small pile and afterwards vacuum harvesters collect and transport it to larger stockpiles.</p>



<p>Although milled peat is cheaper to harvest than block peat, it generally has a larger amount of fine granulation.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BLOCK PEAT</h2>



<p>Block Peat refers to the machine extraction of peat blocks by white peat cutting machines. The peat blocks or sods must dry in the field for at least one year in order to reduce the moisture content from 90% to about 40-60%. In the factory we slice the peat blocks and sieve into various fractions!</p>



<p>Usually, block peat is u in coarser products, with larger fractions. Ensuring more air in the substrates and natural peat products, block peat allows greater air and water retention for most demanding plants. Better root development and access to valuable vitamins and minerals from the additives in the Nord Agri substrates.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Clients often complain that after opening the packing there is fungus on the peat surface and smell is weird. What are the reasons and what to do?</h4>



<p></p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>MOLD</strong></h3>



<p>Pure peat has up to 98% of organic matter concentration and frequently the fungi are drawn to organic stuff. To make peat a growing medium, it is almost always treated with lime and fertilisers. These chemicals improve microorganisms&#8217; life circumstances and improve growing conditions for the plants.</p>



<p>At this stage, saprophytic fungi (and bacteria) living on dead plant material, as well as airborne spores that are constantly present in the environment, might infiltrate the peat. Substrate packagings with fungal growth should be opened and thoroughly mixed to allow for as much aeration as feasible. The fungal mycelium immediately collapses after aeration. Because the fungi are solely saprophytic, the fungal mycelium causes no damage to the crop.</p>



<p>Fungal growth on substrate surfaces is created by high humidity and damp circumstances and is typically caused by airborne spores. As a result, all preventive and therapeutic treatments should aim to produce a drier environment and guarantee proper <strong>aeration</strong> of plants and substrate. Implement a dry crop cultivation to enable the substrate&#8217;s surface to dry. Reduce the relative humidity within the greenhouse if at all feasible. There is no effective fungicide on the market for saprophytic fungus. </p>



<p>Fungicides have almost no effect on soil, and it does not influence the product quality! Remember to aerate and mix the product thoroughly!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>SMELL</strong></h3>



<p>It is possible that odor will arise in compressed peat products. This is possible after a lengthy journey in unfavourable hot weather conditions. The odor is similar to rotting eggs or ammoniac. It is a symptom of anaerobic microbiological activity in the compressed substrate and is aided by high temperatures and low oxygen levels. </p>



<p>Smell is difficult to avoid and examine since it is influenced by a variety of factors, including:</p>



<ul><li>Microbiological life in peat</li></ul>



<ul><li>Temperature during shipping</li></ul>



<ul><li>Cargo lead times</li></ul>



<ul><li>Storage conditions after arrival</li></ul>



<p><br>So far, not much is known about the exact mechanisms, although it is predicted that biological activities of bacteria induce nitrate and sulphate reduction. As a result, there is a stench and, in certain cases, a reduction in accessible nitrate nitrogen in the substrate.</p>



<p>This is not to say that the substrate is of poor quality. Often the substrate can be utilized without restriction if the following preparations are taken prior to use: </p>



<p>If items exhibit fungus or odor, the substrate should be removed promptly to allow the material to aerate. Existing gases can disperse, and oxygen returns to the substrate, halting the activities. If feasible, keep in bulk for a day or two and turn at regular intervals. During aeration, the odor can dissipate.</p>


Mold or smell in peat moss? Don’t worry!


<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Peat Bog types and characteristics</strong></h2>



<p>Each peat bog is different and peat moss harvested from it will also vary. There are many different peat bog types depending on the location, climate and other factors. Just to mention a few: Valley, Raised, Blanket, Quaking bog, Cataract bog &#8211; there are many more!</p>



<p>Peat bogs can also be classified by the nutrient content available: Eutrophic bog, Mesotrophic bog, and Oligotrophic bog.</p>



<p>The most valued characteristics of peat moss are&nbsp;stable structure,&nbsp;variety in coarseness,&nbsp;sterility, and the ability to increase the soil&#8217;s capacity to&nbsp;retain moisture&nbsp;and&nbsp;enrich the soil. </p>



<p>Such&nbsp;quality peat&nbsp;is harvested only from the&nbsp;young top layers&nbsp;of a&nbsp;well-established raised peat bog&nbsp;H1-H4. For a really good quality peat moss and superior structure, very important is the&nbsp;content of sphagnum peat moss in the fauna in and around the bog.</p>



<p>As sphagnum peat content creates strong uniformity in the peat structure making its characteristics much better than Blanket bog or Fen bog peat, where high grass, humidity, and other material content do not contribute to peat structure and effectiveness so much.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Surely there are uses for darker, more humid almost black peat from Fen bogs or Blanket bogs, but it is limited and will never be able to provide what a good structure white peat can do.&nbsp; As historically this was the most used type of peat due to availability and difficulties with preparing high raised bogs and harvesting young peat, it is time to leave the past behind and realize the power of white peat.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Preparations before harvesting</strong></h2>



<p>Another&nbsp;very important note is how the peat bog has been prepared for harvest!</p>



<p>A quality process of preparing peat bog for harvest would take at least 3 years and you need to make sure you get rid of as much wood and root material as possible.&nbsp;Many producers try to skip or cut these steps, as it is massive money and time investment. Resulting in a mediocre quality product.</p>



<p>Also, a big role in the quality and purity of peat moss plays the harvesting, processing, and screening equipment.</p>

Peat bog types, differences and harvest


<p>Two weeks is a long time to spend on the road, and our colleague Pāvels Kaupers used every day of it. Between 4 and 16 May 2026, he split his time between Romania and Greece, combining a close look at one specific crop with a broader round of client meetings.</p>



<p>The Romanian leg of the trip was built around blueberries. Pāvels visited growers at a stage when this year&#8217;s crop decisions were still being made, and it&#8217;s one thing to talk about fertigation schedules and soil amendments over a spreadsheet, quite another to stand between the rows and see how the bushes are actually responding. Growers compared notes on bud development, on water management going into the warmer months, and — in more than one conversation — on how Hortimed Humus biostimulant has been performing when worked into their existing programmes.</p>



<p>In Greece, the focus shifted. Rather than one crop, the days there were spent meeting a wider range of Nordagri clients, reviewing how the season is shaping up for each of them and picking up on where our support could be more useful going forward. Hortimed Humus came up here too, this time as clients asked how it might fit alongside what they&#8217;re already using.</p>



<p>It was a demanding two weeks, but exactly the kind of trip that keeps us close to both the specialist growers and the broader client base. Thank you to everyone in Romania and Greece who made time for Pāvels.</p>

Two Countries, One Trip: Nordagri Visits Romania and Greece


<p>Some trips are about opening new doors; others are about keeping existing ones open. Raitis Švāģeris&#8217;s visit to the Czech Republic from 21 to 24 April 2026 was firmly the latter — four days dedicated to sitting down with Nordagri clients, reviewing how the current season is shaping up, and making sure nothing gets lost between one order and the next.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s a short trip on paper, but a full one in practice: several client meetings back to back, a fair amount of driving between them, and a lot of listening. Product performance, delivery timing, and — almost inevitably — a mention of our Hortimed Humus biostimulant came up as clients shared what they&#8217;ve been testing this spring.</p>

Nordagri at Hortiflorexpo IPM Beijing 2026


<p>Few crops present a starker contrast to the fields our team is used to than palm trees grown under the Saudi sun. From 3 to 9 April 2026, Roberts Leitāns travelled to Saudi Arabia to meet with palm tree growers and see first-hand how cultivation looks in a climate defined by heat, sandy soils, and very different water constraints.</p>



<p>The conversations focused on what growers are dealing with season to season — irrigation efficiency, soil structure, and how to get more resilience out of limited organic matter. It&#8217;s exactly the kind of environment where a biostimulant like our Hortimed Humus tends to come up in discussion, and it did, as growers asked how it might fit into their existing root-care routines.</p>



<p>It was a demanding trip in every sense, but a valuable one — a reminder of how differently our products need to be understood depending on where in the world they&#8217;re being used. Thank you to the growers who welcomed Roberts and shared their experience so openly.</p>

Important and positive step in the development of our group


<p>Some trips are about opening new doors; others are about keeping existing ones open. Stanislavs&#8217;s visit to Milan, Italy, from 17. of February to 21. of February 2026 was firmly the former — a chance to attend My Plant &amp; Garden, one of the sector&#8217;s key trade exhibitions, and see where the industry is heading next.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s a short trip on paper, but a full one in practice: stand after stand of new products, packaging concepts, and cultivation solutions, plenty of conversations with exhibitors and fellow visitors, and a lot of walking. Trends in biostimulants, substrate innovation, and — almost inevitably — comparisons to our own Hortimed Humus came up more than once as Stanislavs took stock of what the market is offering this year.</p>



<p>Exhibitions like this are a quiet but essential part of how Nordagri stays ahead of where the industry is going. Our thanks go to everyone Stanislavs spoke with at My Plant &amp; Garden.</p>

<p><strong>Hortimed additive — engineered to upgrade peat substrate performance</strong></p>



<p>Hortimed is Nordagri&#8217;s innovative additive for peat products, designed to improve substrate performance and support healthier plant growth from the earliest stages of cultivation. Rather than replacing a grower&#8217;s existing programme, it&#8217;s built to work within it — integrating into established peat and substrate formulations to lift structure, consistency, and plant response without adding complexity.</p>



<p>For professional growers, that translates into more predictable rooting and stronger, healthier growth across a crop cycle. For distributors and substrate producers, it means a value-added product that differentiates their offering — a peat solution that performs better, backed by a partner who stands behind the formulation.</p>

Nordagri is getting a new look in 2024!


<p>Starting January 1st, 2024 and continuing for an indefinite period, there will be an additional fee applied to exports originating from European ports and destined for the Far East and Middle East.</p>



<p>This fee, known as the Contingency Adjustment Charge (CAC), has been introduced &nbsp;by the shipping companies due to the recent developments in the Red Sea which have led to the temporary suspension of transit via the Suez Canal. Currently, vessels are being rerouted via the Cape of Good Hope.</p>



<p><strong>It&#8217;s important to note that this change in route will result in increased shipping costs and extended shipping times.</strong></p>

<p>Few crops present a starker contrast to the fields our team is used to than palm trees grown under the Saudi sun. From 3 to 9 April 2026, Roberts Leitāns travelled to Saudi Arabia to meet with palm tree growers and see first-hand how cultivation looks in a climate defined by heat, sandy soils, and very different water constraints.</p>



<p>The conversations focused on what growers are dealing with season to season — irrigation efficiency, soil structure, and how to get more resilience out of limited organic matter. It&#8217;s exactly the kind of environment where a biostimulant like our Hortimed Humus tends to come up in discussion, and it did, as growers asked how it might fit into their existing root-care routines.</p>



<p>It was a demanding trip in every sense, but a valuable one — a reminder of how differently our products need to be understood depending on where in the world they&#8217;re being used. Thank you to the growers who welcomed Roberts and shared their experience so openly.</p>
